Binge eating disorder is a serious mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by recurring episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period, often to the point of discomfort or pain. Binge eating disorder is not a simple case of overeating, as it involves feelings of shame, guilt, and loss of control over one's eating habits.
If you or someone you know is struggling with binge eating disorder, it is essential to seek help from a qualified healthcare provider.
In this article, we will explore the symptoms, causes, and treatment options for binge eating disorder.
Symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder
The following are some of the common symptoms of binge eating disorder:
Eating a large amount of food in a short period, even when not hungry
Eating alone due to shame or embarrassment
Feeling guilty, depressed, or disgusted after binge eating
Eating until feeling uncomfortably full
Eating rapidly during a binge episode
Hiding food and eating secretly
Eating in response to stress or negative emotions
Causes of Binge Eating Disorder Binge Eating is actually our body's protective mechanism against famine.
Food restriction and/or being under your body's unrestricted (natural weight) are the main trigger for binge eating.
Food restriction can be due to dieting, not eating adequately during the day or avoiding specific foods/food groups.
During a binge, your body basically takes over forcing you to eat enough food to make up for restriction plus some more in case there is limited food in the near future.
